The city was named for seven forts (Sat-tara), near the city. It was invaded by the Deccan in 1296. Shivaji conquered Satara fort in 1663. The British occupied the area in 1848, and after the Indian Mutiny of 185-58, the city was used as a troop garrison. The city spreads around the base of the fort.

Established in 16th century, Satara has several colleges and other educational institutions affiliated with Shivaji University in Kolhapur.
