Sagar, formerly Saugor, is a city in Madhya Pradesh state, India. It is situated around a lake on a spur of the Vindhya Range, at an elevation of about 2,000 feet above the sea level.
Founded by Udan Singh in 1660, Sagar was constituted a municipality in 1867. The city is a major trade centre for agricultural products. The chief crops of the region are wheat, gram (chickpeas), sorghum (jowar), and oilseeds; people here are engaged in extensive cattle raising. Minerals like sandstone, limestone, and iron ore deposits are found in the nearby area. Hand-loom cotton weaving, oil and flour milling, sawmilling, ghee (clarified butter) processing, bidi & cigarette manufacture, and railway and engineering works are the major industries of the region. There are several Hindu temples, including one dedicated to Chitragupta, in the town.
Sagar has many institution for higher education. The city houses the Dr. Harisingh Gour University and several affiliated colleges. An old Maratha fort now is used for police training school. In addition, an industrial school, an engineering college, and a school of horsemanship are located in the city.
Sagar is located on an extensive plain divided by forested hills and watered by the Sonar River. Several Gupta inscriptions are revealed at nearby Eran in archaeological site.
