Satara is a city in Maharashtra state of western India. It lies on the confluence of the Krishna and Venna rivers, south east of Pune.
The city was named for seven forts (Sat-tara), near the city. It was invaded by the Deccan in 1296. Shivaji conquered Satara fort in 1663. The British occupied the area in 1848, and after the Indian Mutiny of 185-58, the city was used as a troop garrison. The city spreads around the base of the fort.
The city chiefly engages in engineering works and sugar processing industries. Established in 16th century, Satara has several colleges and other educational institutions affiliated with Shivaji University in Kolhapur. It is connected to the rest of state and country by road, train and air. Satara is connected to Mahabaleshwar and Solapur by state highway 58. There are several tourist spots in the city and surrounding region, including Ajinkyatar Fort, Sajjangad Fort, Kaas Plateau, Yewateshwar, Bamnoli, Dhom Dam, and Chaphal.
