Haridwar is an old city and is among the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Hari is another name of Lord Vishnu and the literal meaning of the name Haridwar translates to ‘Gateway to Lord Vishnu’. It is a belief that to reach Badrinath, a temple of Vishnu, one should start their journey from Haridwar.
It is located in the Uttarakhand state. The Hindu's holy river Ganga enters the Indo-Gangetic plane after flowing about 157 kilometers, here in Haridwar. This gave the city its ancient name of "Gangadwara", which means ‘The gateway of the Ganga’. Haridwar is regarded as one of the seven most holy places in the Hindu religion. Legends believe that a drop from the elixir of immortality fell on the Har ki Pauri ghat, and since then it is considered as a very sacred place.”
