Named after the Hindu Goddess (Shyamala Devi), Shimla is the capital city of Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by a border of Uttarakhand, it is an important commercial, cultural, and educational centre of the state. Known for its beautiful hills and forests, Shimla used to be the winter capital of British India. After Independence, the city served as the capital of Punjab. After the formation of Himachal Pradesh state, the city became a part of the state and since then, it has been serving as the capital of the state.
