Located about 200 km from Bangalore, Chitradurga is located in the southern part of Karnataka. The place was also known by the names of Chitradurg, Chitrakaladurga, Chittaldurg, Chittaldrug during the British rule. It was known as Farkhabad during the Tipu Sultan rule. The place derives its name from the Chitrakaldurga(Picturesque castle), an umbrella shaped lofty hill found here. As the place is surrounded by rocks, boulders and valleys, it is fondly known as “Kallina Kote” or Stone Fortress.
The place is also known for the famous ruler Madakari Nayaka and the brave lady Onake Obavva. Obavva is known for the bravery she exhibited in killing hundreds of enemy soldiers of Hyder Ali. The ruler tried to enter the fort through an opening in the fort, which is known by the name “Obavvana Kindi”. The place is a true treasure of the history to explore.
