Purulia is a city in West Bengal state, India. Constituted a municipality in 1876, it is located just north of the Kasai River.
The city is the region’s major agricultural distribution centre; cane work, shellac manufacture, silk and cotton weaving, and oilseed milling are the major industries. Several rivers from the Himalayas flows through it which provides a reservoir, flood control, and irrigation for the area. Jute and banana are its major agriculture products. Nearby are several 7th-century Jain temple ruins. It has some colleges affiliated with the University of Burdwan.
