Chandrapur is a municipality in the state of Maharshtra. Founded by Khandkya Ballal Shah, a Gond King of the 13th century, Chandrapur is a fort city in the Chandrapur district.
The name Chandrapur is derived from the name Chandra( moon) and pur (a settlement) after a legend. It has got the nickname as “black gold city” as the area near the city is rich in coal. Also the city lies at the confluence of Irai and Zarpat rivers making it a industrial zone. According to the 2011 census of India, the population was recorded as 375,000. Marathi is the main language of locals in the city. Chandrapur is also called as “geological museum” due to the large variety of rocks as well as commercially valuable minerals and fossils.”
