ABOUT HIMACHAL PRADESH

Himachal Pradesh is located in the extreme northern part of the Asian subcontinent. It is bounded in the north by the state of Jammu and Kashmir, to the east by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. In the south east, it is surrounded by Uttarakhand, in south it is bounded by Haryana and the western boundaries are covered by Punjab. Some of the major towns of the state are Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie, Pathankot, Solan, Kasauli, Mandi, Nalagarh, Jwalaji, palampur and Rampur.

Himachal Pradesh occupies a region of scenic splendour in the western Himalayas, offering a multi-textured performance of the dense forests, splendid mountains, beautiful valleys, large lakes, terraced fields, and the broad streams. Indeed, the state's name is a reference to its setting; Himachal means "snowy slopes" (Sanskrit: Hima, "snow"; acal, "slopes"), and Pradesh means "state."

Shimla was once the summer headquarters of pre-independence British viceroys; it is now Himachal Pradesh capital, and, at an altitude of about 7,100 feet (2,200 meters), one of the largest and most popular hill spots in the country. On 25th January, 1971 Himachal Pradesh became a state carved out of union territory. The area of the state is 21,495 square miles (55,673 sq km) and the population is 6,856,509, as per 2011 census.
