Sawai Madhopur was laid out on a plan somewhat similar to that of Jaipur city and was built by Maharaja Madho Singh of Jaipur (1751–68). Sawai Madhopur junction is on Delhi Mumbai trunk route; it is connected to major cities of Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Jaipur, Kota, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, and Varanasi by rail and roads. The city is engaged in trade of metalware and agricultural products. Its handmade copper and brass vessels, round playing cards, and lacquered woodwork are famed across the country, as are papier-mâché objects, and a scented extract of khas-khas grass. The principal crops of the Sawai Madhopur and surrounding region include wheat, corn (maize), rice, barley, gram (chickpeas), sugarcane, and oilseeds.
